The Otago region is located in the southern area of New Zealand’s South Island. With an area of 32,000 square kilometres (12% of the country’s land area) and 203,500 people, it is the country’s second largest region

Dunedin is the main urban centre for the region, which also includes major tourist centres such as Queenstown and Wanaka.

Otago is also home to New Zealand’s first university – the University of Otago – founded in 1869.Dunedin is famous for being a city of students, with a vibrant young population.

Weather conditions across Otago are extremely varied if you travel between the coast and the more continental climate in the interior. The region usually enjoys warm and dry summers, followed by cold and wet winters. The continental climate in central Otago is part of the reason why the region produces such good quality wines.

Industries such as engineering, tourism and wine are flourishing in the region, and there are plenty of opportunities available for migrants who decide to settle down south.
